Iridescent is a “community of women committed to awakening the brilliance within each other one real conversation and true contribution at a time.” The group champions CRISTA Ministries’ World Concern and recently interviewed Katie Toop, World Concern’s Senior Director of Transformational Development on its podcast.

In the interview, Katie talks about her own calling to work with the poor, citing Amos 5:23-24 as the scripture that made her rethink the direction of her life. It says …

Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
But let justice roll on like a river,
righteousness like a never-failing stream!

A worship leader in her student chapel experiences, Katie reflected on this verse, saying, “You can’t remove the conversation about loving the poor from the conversation about worship – one doesn’t exist without the other. If you love the poor without the worship of God, it becomes this idolatry of good works. And if you worship without loving the poor, it can become noise to a God of justice and righteousness.”

Katie goes on to tell what working overseas has taught her and how working in the non-profit sector has personally changed her life. She also discusses the truly transformational work of World Concern, and how we can each help end the cycle of poverty for those living in some of the most rural and remote places in the world today.
